When I heard that a long-term client was being kicked upstairs from CEO to Chair, I gave him a call: he had always been full on and the Chair role was only going to keep him busy for 2-3 days a month. I asked him what his retirement plans were.
He looked dumbstruck and eventually managed to utter “…golf?” After another long pause: “nah, I have too many friends who have become golf bores, some alcoholics…” After another moment of reflection he added: “Well I’ve always wanted to learn to play the piano?”…”but my wife stopped work 8 years ago. I have no idea how we are going to get along…”
Clearly he had been taken by surprise. It was time for a structured process. Watch this space for an update!
